In our series titled “Spotlight On,” we explore the latest ideas and research shaping the education landscape with a close look at the evidence-based programs and solutions at the forefront of accelerating improvement in key academic and socioemotional outcomes for all children. Our latest Spotlight On Evidence features Pete Lavorini, portfolio manager, Innovative Schools, in conversation with Meghan McCormick, research and impact officer.

Together, they discuss the Foundation’s vision for investing in evidence-building and examine the current body of research on the potential of high-impact tutoring to support student achievement. Pete and Meghan also answer the critical questions school and district leaders need to understand as they consider what tutoring solutions will best support their students in the 2024-25 school year and beyond.

“There’s decades of evidence from experimental studies, descriptive studies, and quasi-experimental work showing that when kids get high-impact tutoring and they get the chance to learn with that kind of individualized approach, we see benefits and impacts on student achievement, particularly in math. There’s an opportunity at the Foundation to continue investing in organizations that are working to scale high-impact tutoring models across the country in innovative and cost-effective ways,” said Meghan.

“We’re focused on investing in tutoring programs that align with this vision of providing high-quality, personalized learning supports to students and helping them scale, and ensuring that they’re delivering the type of programs that we know from research stand to have big impacts on kids’ achievement.”
