Future Of: Student Success, A Conversation With Ben Kornell

Ben Kornell and Jon Sotsky

Our Future Of series features one-on-one conversations that explore the critical ideas, innovations, and challenges shaping the future of Pre-K-12 education.

In our latest episode, Jon Sotsky, the Foundation’s senior director of strategic impact and learning, sat down with Ben Kornell to discuss the future of student success.

As the co-founder of Edtech Insiders, Ben builds connections across the education ecosystem to understand how technology can better support teaching and learning. He’s spent more than 20 years advising founders, investing in early-stage startups, and engaging with school leaders.

The conversation explores how the world students are preparing to enter is rapidly changing—and what that means for our definition of student success.

“Critical thinking, collaboration, communication… these are all going to be essential elements and building blocks as younger learners grow older and navigate five, six, seven career pivots and technological pivots.”

Ben discusses the role of technology in his vision for the future, outlining where he sees the most promise for artificial intelligence to improve student success—such as formative, real-time assessments—as well as the areas where he’s less optimistic. He also shares advice for decision-makers navigating these technology shifts in their own schools and classrooms.

“When we lead with the technology, we often lose sight of the education practices and procedures that really ground us in the why,” said Ben. “What I encourage all educators to do from the classroom level up to the superintendent is to be really intentional around: what are our educational priorities, what does teaching and learning look like for us, where are we hitting barriers, and where are the opportunities?”
