Early Evidence of Improved Educator Outcomes in Next Education Workforce Models

Principal Investigator

Mary Laski – Center on Reinventing Public Education

Project Description

This is a descriptive study that examined differences in outcomes for teachers in ASU Next Education Workforce strategic staffing models and teachers in non-Next Education Workforce settings that continued business-as-usual instruction. Next Education Workforce is a strategic staffing approach in which teachers work in a team of educators, drawing from complementary skills and expertise and sharing responsibility for one roster of students. This team-based approach aims to allow educators to differentiate roles and distribute responsibilities, easing the burden on each teacher and allowing for increased collaboration and support within the teaching team. The study used data from the Mesa Public Schools (MPS) collected from 2021 through 2023. The research team used both administrative data on teachers collected by MPS and survey data collected from Johns Hopkins University.

Research Questions

  • What is the difference in outcomes between teachers in NEW models and non-teamed teachers?

Key Findings

Study findings revealed that, compared to teachers in business-as-usual comparison settings, educators in Next Education Workforce models were more likely to: remain at their school in the following year; plan to stay in the profession for five years; recommend teaching to a friend; and receive a higher evaluation rating from their principal or other school leader.
