The Family Math Initiative is a collective of organizations, led by the National Association for Family School Community Engagement, that support children and families to strengthen math awareness and skills in the context of family relationships, the community, and everyday life. The project recognizes the power of families as catalysts of their children’s learning. As an early funder of this work, Overdeck Family Foundation has played key roles in developing and funding pilot programs that aim to increase early math confidence.
Research shows that early math skills are key to later academic success: math skills upon entering kindergarten are the best predictor of eighth-grade performance regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status. As a founding funder of the Family Math initiative, Overdeck Family Foundation advocates for advancing the emerging field of “family math” and exposing children to math early and often in a non-academic setting even before they start formal schooling.
By working with families to provide the tools they need to support children in building confidence and enthusiasm for math from the get-go, we hope to eliminate the opportunity gaps that can result from lack of math exposure and ensuing math anxiety.
