Back to Chronic Absenteeism

Evaluating the Impact of Parent-Teacher Home Visits on Student Attendance and Chronic Absenteeism

Principal Investigator

Lucrecia Santibañez – UCLA

Project Description

This study evaluates the impact of the Parent-Teacher Home Visits (PTHV) model on student attendance and chronic absenteeism in elementary and middle schools. Using a quasi-experimental matching design, the research compares outcomes for students in classrooms implementing PTHV with matched comparison classrooms in the same districts. The study draws on administrative student-level data, including attendance, demographics, and academic outcomes, alongside survey data capturing implementation fidelity and educator experiences. It also examines how impacts vary across student subgroups, including low-income students, English learners, and students of color, and investigates the mechanisms through which home visits—such as improved trust and family engagement—may influence attendance outcomes.

Research Questions

  • What is the impact of parent-teacher home visiting on chronic absenteeism?
  • To what extent does the program reduce absenteeism for key student subgroups?
  • What mechanisms explain how home visits influence attendance outcomes?
