Evaluating the Impact of Magpie on K–2 Students’ Foundational Literacy Skills

Principal Investigator

Tareena Musaddiq – Mathematica

Project Description

This study evaluates the implementation and impact of Magpie, a digital literacy tool designed to build foundational reading skills for students in kindergarten through second grade. The study includes an initial implementation phase to assess usage patterns, fidelity, and feasibility, followed by a randomized controlled trial comparing classrooms or schools using Magpie to those continuing with business-as-usual instruction. Data collection includes student literacy assessments, platform usage data, teacher surveys, focus groups, and site visits. Outcomes focus on early literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, decoding, and word recognition, as well as how usage and implementation conditions influence effectiveness across diverse student populations.

Research Questions

  • What is the impact of Magpie on kindergarten through second grade students’ foundational literacy skills?
  • How does the impact of Magpie vary by dosage (time on tool, lessons completed)?
  • How does the impact of Magpie vary across student subgroups (e.g., race/ethnicity, EL status, FRL)?
