Updating the Attendance Playbook: Evidence-Based Strategies to Reduce Chronic Absenteeism

Principal Investigator

Thomas Toch – Georgetown University

Project Description

This study updates and expands the Attendance Playbook, a widely used resource that compiles research-based strategies for reducing chronic absenteeism. The project synthesizes recent evidence on attendance interventions and organizes strategies into a tiered framework ranging from universal supports to targeted interventions for students with higher levels of absenteeism. The study also assesses the strength of evidence for each strategy using established federal standards for evidence and translates findings into actionable guidance for policymakers and practitioners. The final outputs include a comprehensive playbook and dissemination activities designed to support the adoption of evidence-based approaches to improving student attendance at scale.

Research Questions

  • What strategies are most effective at reducing chronic absenteeism, and what is the strength of evidence supporting each approach?
  • How can research on absenteeism be translated into actionable guidance to support policy and practice at the state and local levels?
